I'm a Chrome user, a Google Search Labs user, but also a fan of https whenever/wherever possible to make sure what I'm doing is secure between my computer and the server responding.
I obviously have Google set as my default search engine, but wanted to have the https version as my default, with labs turned on.
As a side note, the reason I like Google Search Labs so much is because I can use keyboard shortcuts to open up results, shift-enter to open in a new tab, etc.
Anyway, it was pretty easy. I'm on a Mac, so I here are the steps to follow:
- press Command-, (read Command-Comma)
- Focus on the bottom Default search: label. Hit the Manage button
- Hit the + button in the bottom left
- You'll see three inputs in the popup/drop-down. Put
encrypted.google.com
for both the Name and Keyword inputs. Put in the urlhttps://encrypted.google.com/search?q=%s
for the URL input. - Hit the OK button
- You should see the
encrypted.google.com
option at the bottom of the list now. Scroll down to it, and set it as default
Boom! Now when you do searches through the address bar, rest assured it's been transmitted securely :)
